Awareness on Bear Conservation conducted, Tamenglong

Tamenglong 5th July, 2025, (DIPR): Tamenglong Forest Division today conducted a One day Awareness program on Forest Protection with special focus to Bear Conservation  at Phelong, Tousem Range, Tamenglong District.
 
Shri Joel Gangmei, RFO, Tamenglong, Shri A. Promeshwor Singh, RFO, Tousem, Shri Meiruthai Panmei, Member, Manipur Wildlife Board and Shri Withuing Inchangta, Secretary Phelong Village Authority attended as resource persons and presidium members. About sixty villagers of Phellong village participated in the program.
 
The key aspects of this awareness program is to raise public awareness about the different bear species in India, their ecological roles, and the threats they face. 
 
The resource persons also talk  about providing rescue, care, and rehabilitation facilities for orphaned or injured bears, with the goal of eventual release back into the wild.  And also highlighted about engaging local communities in conservation efforts and encouraging them to become "Bear Guardians," and promoting responsible coexistence with bears. 
 
Bear cubs were found orphaned in many villages of Tamenglong district. Recently Two Himalayan black Bears cub of about three months in age which were rescued by DC, Tamenglong Shri Angshim Dangshwa, IAS, from Kadi Village have been handed over by DFO, Tamenglong Shri Kharibam Hitler Singh and RFO Tamenglong Shri Joel Gangmei to Manipur Zoological Gardens. The two bear cubs were received by the Veterinary Officer, Dr. L. Saratchandra Singh of Manipur Zoological Gardens, Iroishemba on 29/06/2025.
 
Himalayan Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus laniger) is included in the Schedule I of Wildlife Protection Act 1972.
